This gondola is based on the prototype car Southern 991737. The car was built by the Mount Vernon Car Manufacturing Company for the Southern Railway as a 50 ton, 41'6" drop bottom gondola. The car was equipped with wooden and steel sides that featured 6 drop doors, fixed ends, and 1,825 cubic foot capacity. This car was also one out of many that were rebuilt to an all steel configuration in 1967, increasing their cubic capacity to 1,965 or 55 tons. In the 1980's, this car was placed in MOW service on continuous welded rail trains.  In March 2025, Norfolk Southern donated the car to the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC.
